Description

You will be making a custom wood table top and a welded steel base! In this class you will learn to safely run many of our woodshop and metal shop tools and equipment! Your work in the woodshop includes; planer, jointer, chop saw, table saw, biscuit joiner, sliding table saw, and timesaver. You will do all finish sanding by hand and finish with an oil or hand rub poly. In the metal room, you will learn all necessary steps for cutting, prepping, welding, and grinding in order to fabricate a custom raw steel base! You will have the option to finish the steel with a wax onsite or leave your base unfinished to paint later at home. Available lumber species for the top: walnut, cherry, maple, ash. Feel free to mix and match to make a cool pattern or go with a single species for a more classic piece. Available base material: 1.25" steel square tubing, 1.5" steel square tubing. Day 1 (10/05/21): Cut, joint, plane, rip, biscuit, and glue lumber for butcher block or wide plank top. Day 2 (10/12/21): Cut final dimensions of top. Sand and applying finish. Sneak peek into the metal room. Day 3 (10/19/21): Learn to weld. Practice welding and cut stanchions for your frame. Prep material and begin welding base! Day 4 (10/26/21): Finish welding base and grind. Attach top to base.. You've designed and made an entire table! Hit the ground running! Come with a bit of a design in mind, though there will be many weeks to perfect this (: Don't fret if you're self-diagnosed as "uncreative", your classmates will have awesome ideas that will spark your creativity and we're here to help as well! No gear, no problem! All materials, tools, hardware, and safety equipment are provided! Dimensions! If you know exact desired dimensions, please come with those in hand. If not, have a good picture in your mind of the space you want it to fill and know the possible table size will max out at 48" long x 22" wide x 20" tall. Classmates! Come solo and make friends! Talk a buddy into making a table along side you! This class maxes at 4 students and is great for ambitious beginners! Break out the overalls! Please wear jeans or canvas pants and closed-toed shoes; leather boots are best if you have them. On welding days, no mesh sneakers and no synthetic clothing. On all days, be sure to wear clothing you don't mind working in, you'll want to be comfortable and protected.
