SUNOL, CA — An off-duty Union City police officer rushed to help people hurt in a head-on crash early Sunday morning in Sunol that ultimately killed a child and left four people with serious injuries, KTVU reported. The collision happened on State Route 84 east of Interstate Highway 680 shortly after 6 a.m., when a white Chevrolet Tahoe headed westbound turned to the left and into the eastbound lane, hitting a black Dodge Charger. It's unclear why the man driving the Chevrolet turned left, CHP Officer Tyler Hahn said. The drivers of both cars and three passengers riding in the Dodge were hospitalized. The age of the child who died was not known, Hahn said. Officer Sarah Lings came upon the crash soon after it happened, realized the cars' occupants must be seriously hurt and grabbed her trauma kit, KTVU reported. A respiratory therapist who saw the crash also jumped in to help. The pair began CPR to bring the injured children back to consciousness until first responders arrived 10 minutes later to take the victims to the hospital, the station reported. Alcohol or drug use are not suspected to be factors in the collision, the CHP said. The crash closed both directions of State Route 84 in both directions for about three hours. The crash is still under investigation and any witnesses are asked to call the Dublin CHP office at (925) 828-0466. Read more at KTVU.
