LA GRANGE, IL — La Grange saw a drop in new coronavirus cases last week, according to the Cook County Public Health Department. The three previous weeks, it experienced increases. As of Sunday, La Grange, including La Grange Highlands, had seen 2,443 coronavirus cases since the beginning of the pandemic, 22 more than the previous week. The week before last, La Grange experienced 29 new cases. According to the Cook County Medical Examiner's Office, the local number of recorded coronavirus-related deaths stayed the same in the last week, at 34. The four latest deaths were May 24, May 22, May 14 and Feb. 13. All the local deaths have been those who were 61 or older, according to the medical examiner. The mortality rate among La Grange cases is 1.4 percent. About a tenth of 1 percent of the local population has died from the virus. The figure compares to 88 in Darien, 95 in La Grange Park, 99 in DuPage County and Hinsdale, 103 in Elmhurst, 109 in Western Springs, 109 in Clarendon Hills and suburban Cook County, and 112 in Burr Ridge. As of Sunday, Illinois' coronavirus case count increased to 1,538,324, up 2 percent from a week earlier, according to the state Department of Public Health. The number of confirmed deaths so far is 24,067. Nationally, 39.8 million cases of the coronavirus have been reported, up 2.9 percent from the week before, according to the Centers for Disease Control. A total of 634,858 people have died from the virus in the United States.
