ELMHURST, IL — The number of new coronavirus cases last week in Elmhurst rose from the previous few weeks, according to the DuPage County Health Department. As of Sunday, the city had seen 4,795 cases since the beginning of the pandemic, up 79 from a week before. The week before last, Elmhurst experienced an increase of 60 new cases. The numbers remain high compared to most of the summer. As of Sunday, the number of coronavirus-related deaths in Elmhurst rose by one in the last week, to 70. The mortality rate among those locally with the coronavirus is 1.5 percent. The number of confirmed deaths so far is 24,067. Nationally, 39.8 million cases of the coronavirus have been reported, up 2.9 percent from the week before, according to the Centers for Disease Control. A total of 634,858 people have died from the virus in the United States.
