BERKELEY, CA — A shooting Saturday in broad daylight near a West Berkeley park has rattled neighbors and led to a councilmember calling a community safety meeting. No injuries were reported according to police. Officers responded just before noon to reports of gunfire in the area of 10th and Addison streets near George Florence Park, the Berkeley Police Department said in a statement. A bullet hole was found in a vehicle in the 2100 block of 10th Street, police said. Disturbed at the news of another shooting in West Berkeley. I empathize with neighbors losing patience with violence erupting in our community. TY @berkeleypolice for responding. Chat with me in George Florence Park tomorrow. "West Berkeley has seen a terrifying uptick in gun violence over the past year," Taplin said in a statement. "I empathize with community members who are losing patience with the violence erupting in our neighborhoods, threatening their households, and making parks, schools and streets unsafe. "Gun violence and the proliferation of illegal firearms are a menace. I'm working closely with the City Manager's office and the Brady Center to Prevent Gun Violence on an ordinance to prohibit untraceable ghost guns, and I've also worked with local civil rights leaders to introduce a budget referral for automated license plate readers in high-crime areas. "We need to act quickly. Enough is enough." The shooting was first reported by Berkeleyside.
