PHOENIX, AZ — A 2-year-old boy was pronounced dead Monday night after drowning in the 6800 block of West Pleasant Lane, according to the Phoenix Police Department. The boy drowned Monday night at around 6:20 p.m., police said. The boy was transported to a local hospital in extremely critical condition where he later died, according to police. "At this time, this is being investigated as a tragic accident," Phoenix police said in a news release. The boy was not identified. Drowning is one of the most common causes of death in Arizona for children younger than 4, according to the city of Phoenix. Most child drownings occur in their own family pools, according to the city, but they can also happen in canals, buckets, toilets, bathtubs and ponds. How to prevent a drowning, according to the city of Phoenix: Use an approved barrier to close off the pool area from your house. Never leave children alone near a pool or any other water source, including bathtubs, buckets, toilets, ponds and canals.Keep life-saving devices near your pool: hooks, poles, or flotation devices.Keep large objects like tables, chairs, tricycles or ladders away from pool barriers. Always designate a person to watch children when they are in or near the pool. Do not allow children to play in the pool area and store all toys outside of the pool area.When you leave the pool area, bring all children with you.
