Free cats and dogs get treated badly. With dogs, someone might tie him to a tree and he will suffer in that situation. Dogs want to be part of the family. Evil people use dogs as fight bait for pit bulls. They tape thier legs so the can't fight back.
People who take free pets usually can't afford the flea and heartworm meds, so they go untreated. Many people just should not have pets and giving them for free makes it likely that they will go to the wrong people. Please contact a rescue or or at least charge a $50 fee and check their vet references.
Free cats don't fare much better. Cats are tossed into Pitt rings too, so people can bet on which one dies first...and last. Cats that don't get neutered will fight, run away and produce hundreds of offspring that no one wants.
When landlords find out there are pets that got sneaked in, they demand a deposit or start eviction proceedings. The pet gets dumped.
Taking them to Aggieland Humane would be better than giving them away for free. The shelter, and Rescues will screen adopters and make sure the pet will be safe. Please don't give pets away for free.
