In honor of Hispanic Heritage Month, the Town of Cottage City presents Day of the Dead celebration!
Join us for this free outdoor family friendly event where we'll learn about the cultural significance of day of the dead traditions through a presentation by Marco Polo Juarez Cruz from the University of Maryland.
Participants of the event will also have the opportunity to collaboratively create a community altar. Activities also include decorating skull masks and making 'papel picado' decorations. Come and enjoy great music and food, too!
Attendees are encouraged to bring a picture in memory of a lost loved one, family member, neighbor, friend or famous celebrity. A photocopy is also fine to bring.
What is Dia de los Muertos (Day of the Dead)? Dia de los Muertos is rooted in Hispanic and Mesoamerican traditions, originated centuries ago in the pre-Hispanic cult to the Dead. These celebrations honor the life of the late family member, creating an altar with colorful flowers and favorite belongings of the departed as a threshold that connects the underworld. The festivity has continued until today and has become popular in the United States.
