Introduction to Trauma and Trauma- Informed Services in School Setting: Will learn to observe their students through a trauma lens
Overview: In this introductory course about trauma and resilience participants will learn to observe their students through a trauma lens. Participants will learn the varying types of trauma people experience, the impacts of trauma on the developing brain, and how trauma influences emotions, thinking, and behavior particular to student educational outcomes. This presentation includes discussion on collective trauma experienced by their ancestors and tribe. Limited time will be spent defining and conceptualizing historical trauma as it pertains to individuals, families, and the larger tribal community.
This presentation will focus on 1) the impacts of trauma on students in multiple domains (behaviors, emotions, relationships, cognition, and worldview); 2) environmental and relational strategies of support; 3) trauma-focused curricula and interventions teaching coping and self-regulation skills; and 4) the identification and referral of children who may need additional services. The Trauma-Resilient Schools presentation is meant to lay the foundation that works with a school’s existing system of prevention and intervention around social/ emotional/ behavioral supports.
