Description

A collaborative workshop to beautify and activate Hamiltons HS's main quad, a place for learning, socializing and self-care. WHEN + WHERE: Saturday, September 18th @ 9:30-12:30 PM on the Hami quad. LUNCH WILL BE PROVIDED! WHO: The Department of Landscape Architecture at Cal Poly Pomona (CPP) would like to collaborate with the Hamilton H.S. Science department on an outdoor learning project structured around beautifying and activating Hamilton’s main quad.  WHAT: CPP landscape architecture students led by their professor, Rennie Tang, will conduct a hands-on workshop in the quad. The goal is to guide Hamilton students in the design of an ecologically diverse and socially active green space for everyone to enjoy.  HOW: Participants will be led through a design exercises to consider how natural elements, like stumps, boulders and native plants, could be used to make the lawn space more inviting.  They will consider design strategies to expand the ways Hami students engage with this area, creating more opportunities to support learning, socializing, and self-care. Also, students will learn the ways in which these elements, particularly the introduction of native plants, will improve and support ecological services on our campus. The exercise will also explore the expansion of edible gardening in the quad through the planning of additional planting beds. WHY: This workshop will engage Hamilton students with the landscape design process while interacting with college students from CPP. We hope this becomes a long-term collaboration between CPP and Hamilton H.S. that could take the form of future workshops, field trips to Cal Poly Pomona to visit the College of Environmental Design, etc.  Associate Professor of Landscape Architecture at Cal Poly Pomona
