Description

Althoug Hooper Strait Light resides in St. Michael's Maryland, it was originally located about 40 miles south in Hooper Straight, a winding channel of the Chesapeake Bay. A variety of lights have been used in Hooper Straight to guide ship traffic intoMaryland and points northward. The first was a lightship, which floated in the channel from 1827 until it was replaced with a modest screwpile structure in 1867. The replacement served for a decade until floating ice sheared the supporting piles and carried the lighthouse 5 miles south. Using the lantern and lens salaveded from the original light, a new lighthouse was constructec in 1879. The larger structure, consisting of a 1 1/2 story hexigonal house, endured for 3/4 of a century until the Coast Guard automated it in1954. Shortly afterwards, the Cheaspeake BayMaritime Museum acquired the lighthouse and moved the 44 foot structure by barge to its facility in ST. Michaels. Hooper Straight Light now stands as a fully restored showpiece on Navy Point beside the museum. Danbury Mint. 4 1/4" tall
