Wood Preparation for Stove

Winter.. cooler nights are coming and I want to prepare now.. First time I will be using a wood stove.. I don’t know really the type of wood I should use. Most everyone says use a hard wood and not the soft wood.. but I am having difficulty in finding the right kind without any experience.. I don’t want to pick up something that could be dangerous to use.. Don’t want to just throw any piece of wood into the stove.. I see a lot of wood just driving around from cut trees.. Thanks for info..
