Description
My normal weekday morning routine is to rush around the house, pausing in front of the kitchen sink to chug down coffee and vitamins before embarking on the day's adventures.
Over the weekend, I treated myself to a proper sit-down breakfast with a napkin, placemat, silverware, Real Food, even.
What a good idea! Especially for the long time unseen friend who kept me company while I ate. She was a sweet little downy woodpecker girl, maybe attracted by the cooking smells, who perched on a lilac branch and watched me with interest.
With a window screen between us, we could both afford to be bolder than otherwise. We got pretty close: not nose to beak, but nearly.
Just as I'd decided to offer her a treat from my plate, there came a familiar whinny-whistle from a couple doors up. My friend turned in the direction of the backyard stand of Norways, then called back. At Couple Doors Up's response, she took off.
I finished my pancakes alone, but content, thankful for the unexpected company.
