TAMPA, FL - Concorde Career Colleges/Institute, a national leader in health care education with 17 campuses in eight states, has launched an accelerated dental hygiene program at its Tampa campus that will help address a shortage in dental professionals. Enrollment is open and classwork will begin in November for the 17-month program, which has been granted the status of initial accreditation this month by the Commission on Dental Accreditation (CODA). Concorde's dental hygiene program is more accelerated than other area programs, allowing students to earn an associate's degree and enter the workforce quicker. An open house is planned at the Concorde Career Institute-Tampa campus at 11 a.m. Sept. 10, including a tour of the new clinic where Concorde dental hygiene instructors and students will serve the community through low-cost dental care. "The Dental Hygiene Program offered by Concorde Career Institute-Tampa will prepare students for an exciting career in dental hygiene and allow them to face all the new nuances that this profession offers," said Dr. Daniel A. Hassler, Dental Hygiene Program director. "Emphasis will always be placed on the concepts of instructing our dental hygiene students to become life-long learners dedicated to the advancement of the profession and providers of oral health care to all communities." The urgent need for dental hygiene professionals is regional and nationwide. According to a recent survey by the American Dental Association, more than one-third of owner dentists were looking to hire dental hygienists and about 66 percent of them said recruiting was extremely challenging, as shortages increased due to the pandemic. Concorde's dental hygiene program will be a mixture of classroom learning and hands-on labs, as well as working with patients in the dental clinic. The clinic will offer services, including cleanings, X-rays and gum disease consultation to thise who have difficulty affording dental care on their own. The Concorde-Tampa campus, which offers a variety of health care programs, is located at 4202 W. Spruce St., Tampa. For more information, visit the website at: www.concorde.edu or call 813-874-0094.
