UNION COUNTY, NJ — As the Delta variant of COVID-19 spreads, the rate of new deaths was up slightly in Union County than the previous week, as the rate of new cases had declined slightly from last week. Nationally, the virus claimed 11,000 more lives since last week. As Friday, Sept. 3, there had been a total of 63,984 cases confirmed in Union County since the start of the pandemic, which is up 484 from the previous Friday. There have also been a total of 1,777 confirmed deaths in Union County, according to the state, which is 8 new deaths since the previous Friday. The week before, there had four new deaths. The state shared new details Friday of "breakthrough" cases of the virus in vaccinated people. Medical professionals have said that while vaccinated people can still get the highly transmissible Delta variant of the virus, a small percentage of those end up hospitalized or pass away from the virus. The Latest Data, Details On Breakthrough COVID-19 Cases In NJ In New Jersey, according to the state, a total of 12,242 vaccinated people have gotten COVID. Among those, 68 have passed away. Those deaths represent .0001 percent of recent COVID-19 deaths, the state said. 307 COVID-related hospitalizations have happened in that time frame among vaccinated people, representing .006 percent, the state says. New Jersey Hospitalizations Up; More On Ventilators Overall, on Friday, Sept. 3, 1,054 people in New Jersey were being treated in hospitals for COVID, up from 1,022 people the previous Friday. More than 643,000 Americans have now died from COVID, up by 11,000 people since last Friday and 20,000 since two weeks ago. You can see which states have the highest recent death rates here. Past Weeks In Union County As Friday, Aug. 27, there had been a total of 63,500 cases confirmed in Union County since the start of the pandemic, which was 670 more than the previous Friday. There have also been a total of 1,769 confirmed deaths in Union County, according to the state, which was four deaths since the Friday before. The week before, on Friday, Aug. 20, there had been a total of 62,830 confirmed cases in Union County since the start of the pandemic, up 566 cases since the previous Friday. And there were 1,767 total deaths countywide, up two deaths since the week before, according to the state. As of the previous Friday, Aug. 13, there had been a total of 62,264 cases confirmed in Union County since the start of the pandemic, and 1,765 confirmed deaths, according to the state. The numbers will be compared with next Friday's numbers during the next weekly roundup. 'High' COVID Activity This week, the Central East region including Union County and three other counties still showed still showed "high" COVID activity, according to New Jersey's latest weekly report. The determination is based on metrics such as case rate and positivity rate. And it may be used in determining school districts' protocols and other health measures. Where To Get Vaccinated Locally The COVID vaccine is 95 percent effective against the virus, according to medical professionals, and while vaccinated people may have "breakthrough cases," there is a lower chance of hospitalization or death for those vaccinated.
