TOMS RIVER, NJ — A Toms River woman suffered minor injuries in a Route 37 crash when her car flipped over, authorities said.
Lorraine Wehman, 78, was taken to Community Medical Center in Toms River for treatment, said Jillian Messina, media relations specialist for the Toms River Police Department.
Wehman was stopped at the light at Clifton Avenue, and started to move forward southbound across Route 37 when traffic signal turned green. She was hit by a 17-year old male driver from Toms River, who was driving east on Route 37 and did not stop for the red light, Messina said.
She said the investigation showed the 17-year-old was not using his cell phone and was not driving under the influence at the time of the crash. He was cited for failure to observe a traffic signal, Messina said.
Wehman's vehicle flipped over and landed on its roof from the impact, Messina said. Both vehicles sustained damage in the crash.
"We'd like to thank the witnesses who rendered aid while waiting for first responders to arrive," Messina said.
Toms River Traffic Safety Officer Robert Westfall investigated.
