Description
Pejepscot History Center's popular Summer Walking Tour series - Le Petit Pont: Life and Work by the Androscoggin, led by Candace Kanes. For years, Pejepscot History Center walking tours have offered stories of the past, perspective on the landscape, social time, and exercise to participants. Of the 12 tours this June-September, a whopping 8 are brand new or heavily revised. Please visit https://pejepscothistorical.org/events/summer-walking-tours for full descriptions of all tours. Le Petit Pont: Life and Work by the Androscoggin, led by Candace Kanes. Beginning in the parking lot of what is now known as Fort Andross, you will imagine the streets and buildings that were once home to its many employees when the building produced cotton fabric and was known as the Cabot Mill. You will continue the imagining as you walk (very carefully) along Mill Street to Le Petit Pont, the structure now called the Swinging Bridge, to explore its history and its relationship to the mill, mill workers and the community on the west end of the bridge, Topsham Heights. You will then cross the bridge to Topsham Heights. While there is still much to look at, you will have to use your imagination to see the area as it was when the bridge was built in 1892 and the several decades after. For those who wish to do so, you can continue the walk along the paved path by the Androscoggin River that connects to Main Street in Topsham and the Green Bridge to return to Fort Andross. Please note that this tour begins in Fort Andross parking lot, Brunswick, Maine. Participants meet at starting point. Please check-in with tour leader at least 10 minutes prior to tour time. Space is limited. PHC maintains a waiting list for each tour in case of cancellations. Most tours are 75-90 minutes. Pejepscot History Center is a non-profit, educational organization charged with preserving the collective heritage of Brunswick, Harpswell, and Topsham. The Society owns and operates the Joshua L. Chamberlain House Museum and the Skolfield-Whittier House, both of which are open to the public Memorial Day-Columbus Day. For further information please call the Center at 207.729.6606 or find us at www.pejepscothistorical.org.
