Japanese stab binding is a versatile book form for beginners and experts alike, ideal for zines, comics, journals, notepads, and more!
Join Dorian for this intro level bookbinding class. Students will learn the basics of Japanese stab binding as well as several stitching patterns for use with this binding method.
Japanese stab binding is a useful binding method for hand-bound publications, because the pages lay flat, rather than being folded over into a signature. In addition, binding can be accomplished relatively quickly. This makes both design and assembly more straightforward, perfect for chapbooks, journals, zines, and more.
Students will select their covers from a selection of different types and designs of paper, cut them to size, and bind their covers to a blank text block. Students will have the opportunity to make up to two books.
All materials will be provided, but students are welcome to bring in their own paper materials to use for covers (e.g.: posters, comic books, decorative paper).
SPPC is an immersive learning space dedicated to print, publishing, and creative play. We provide access to equipment, resources, and expertise to empower our students to execute their own print, book, writing, fabrication, and printing projects.
