Description

Join us to open Aero Obsoleta, a selection of photographs by Allen Jones, in the Prescott Family Trust Gallery at the Museum. Photographer Allen Jones will be on hand to speak about his work, and will be joined by the team from KO Distilling for a tasting of their gin and whiskey offerings as we mark Virginia Spirits Month, and the opening of a new exhibition here at the Military Aviation Museum. Admission to the Gallery Opening is Free for Museum Members. Regular Admission rates apply for Non-Members. Rarely do we give any thought to what happens to aircraft once they have outlived their usefulness, been replaced by newer models or become obsolete. Left in the bone yards of the desert, or left to decay in rural areas, they still hold a place in history as artifacts of our culture. These once pristine, beautifully designed machines are now part of the landscape, taking on a renewed beauty in their state of obsolescence. Allen Jones combined his interest in WWII and in aviation with his interest in exploring how a culture’s changing technology impacts the landscape around us to create the body of work he calls Aero Obsoleta. Aero Obsoleta will be on exhibit at the Museum, in the Prescott Family Trust Gallery, through December 13, 2021 KO Distilling Six years ago, KO Distilling was founded to craft exceptional small batch whiskeys and American-style gins. Lifelong friends Bill Karlson and John O’Mara are the K & O in KO Distilling. They met as classmates and cadet midshipmen at the United States Merchant Marine Academy (USMMA) and have been friends ever since. In 2013 Bill and John set off to create craft spirits with local ingredients, high-quality production methods, and a passion that they were excited to share with their local community. Since breaking ground in 2015, Bill and John have turned KO Distilling into a state-of-the-art production facility and local attraction in Manassas, VA. After their initial offering of unaged craft whiskey and gins in 2015, Bill and John realized their goal of producing their first aged spirit, Bare Knuckle American Wheat Whiskey, in November 2016.
