Description

Explore the southern edge of the Presidio as we traverse past Mountain Lake, the restored habitat at Presidio Hills, and Lobos Creek Valley. This walk will follow an out and back route from the edge of Mountain Lake, through the restoration site at Presidio Hills, and down into the Lobos Creek Valley. Walk leaders will describe the habitat and inhabitants of the Presidio's largest lake, continuing on to the restored dune habitat at Presidio Hills, then descending into Lobos Creek Valley -- one of the first large-scale restoration projects on the Presidio. The group will then return by the same route, observing each of these habitats from a new perspective. Walk Leaders: Emil Fogarino and Tom Scharffenberger Emil is a local naturalist and educator who recently retired from teaching marine biology and natural history at Washington High SF. As a native San Franciscan Emil enjoys sharing and learning about the natural beauty that surrounds us. Tom is a landscape architect/conservation planner and is on the NTC Advisory Council. His interests include natural history, urban design and land use planning. Details:  The walk will be approx 3 miles round-trip. Mostly on paved trail or boardwalk, with some sandy areas. Some hills with a 270 foot elevation gain on the return trip. Preparation:  Wear layers and sturdy shoes. Bring water and a snack. Binoculars are a nice optional tool. Meeting Location:  Meet at the north end of 9th Ave past the intersection of Lake Street, where there is a trailhead into Mountain Lake Park. Transportation: Muni service to the site includes the 28, 43, and bus. Street parking is available in the neighborhood, but please take note of any time limit restrictions.
