Description
Join us to get a peek inside a hive and learn what it takes to be a beekeeper! This event kicks off our community build for the season. We will be kicking off our community build this season with a field day, Saturday September 18th at 1pm, thanks to Vonderohe Bees and our friends at the North Iowa Beekeeper’s Club. We will be visiting an apiary, giving people a chance to ask questions and, if they want to, help open a hive. Learn what it takes to be a beekeeper in North Iowa, what challenges they face, and how you can help make a difference. This field day is just the beginning of a free, weekly workshop at the NIACC Innovation Workspace where you can work with other members of the community to design and build something high tech to help out our beekeepers! 3D printers, laser cutters, electronics, and more will be available for the project. No prior experience necessary, just jump in and learn along the way! All are welcome to join us for this event, regardless of whether you are a 3D printing beekeeper or are brand new to all of this and just think it sounds fun! We are hoping to get students, parents, teachers, and local employees all together to bounce ideas off each other and building a real-world project together! Sign up to let us know you're coming! Reminders! We will be opening some of Vonderohe Bee's hives, and while honeybees are pretty friendly, bees can definitely sting! So make sure to look over this list of reminders! If you are allergic to insect bites or stings, make sure you bring your Epipen with you and keep your distance. Everyone should wear a goodd, thick pair of jeans, close-toed shoes that close up tight (like boots), and a t-shirt or sweatshirt you'll be comfortable in and are okay getting dirty. We are just here to have fun and learn about beekeeping. If you or someone around you isn't comfortable getting close to the hive, don't worry, it is always better to be safe than sorry! We will be watching the forecast as the event approaches and may change the date if the weather isn't cooperating. All the more reason to sign up in case we need to send out updates!I look forward to seeing you there!
