Flood Damage Forces Reopening Changes At 2 New Rochelle Schools

NEW ROCHELLE, NY — School officials say substantial flood damage to New Rochelle High School will mean that students will once again be learning remotely when classes start this month. New Rochelle High School took "substantial damage" from flooding associated with Post-Tropical Cyclone Ida. Flooring, walls, electrical and mechanical systems, including the heating, ventilation and air-conditioning systems were reportedly damaged. On Friday, administrators announced that the high school building will not open on Sept. 10, as planned. Details about a reopening date and plans for remote classes have not yet been finalized. "While this is disappointing news, the health and safety of our students, faculty and staff are our top priority," Superintendent Jonathan Raymond said in a statement announcing the unanticipated back to school changes. "We know these delays impact many families, and our teams at our schools and across our district will work as hard as possible to ensure a positive learning experience for our students and reopen our high school as soon as possible." Meanwhile, Isaac E. Young Middle School also sustained floor and wall damage. The less severe water damage at this building is being repaired. District officials said the school will be cleaned and disinfected and "will be safe and healthy for students and staff." The middle school, which was scheduled to open Friday, Sept. 10, will now open Monday, Sept. 13, instead.
