On this one-of-a-kind tour, you’ll hear about Mike and Glen’s personal stories and memories about Detroit over the last 70 years. With Detroit’s long and interesting history, many have wondered, "if these walls could talk, what stories would they tell?" Well, wonder no more as lifelong Detroiters, Mike Daniels & Glen Hendricks share their personal stories and memories about Detroit over the last 70 years. Their lived experiences, like many Black Detroiters, are a huge part of Detroit’s history but too often are left out of the textbooks and headlines. On this one-of-a-kind tour, you’ll walk through downtown hearing about Mike and Glen’s experiences with some people and places that are well-known like Black Bottom, Hudson’s and Coleman Young but you’ll also hear about Black businesses and inspirational people that many people have forgotten, or perhaps never knew about at all. Discussion topics include: Personal family stories about coming to Detroit during the Great MigrationGrowing up In Black Bottom and Paradise ValleyHow Coleman Young’s election impacted Black Detroiters Longtime Black businesses like Hot Sam’s and SpectaclesBeing an entrepreneur in Detroit in the 80’s How all these stories are woven into the larger history of DetroitThis tour is produced by City Institute. REGISTERING: These tickets are free, but we accept donations to help continue our public programming. RECOMMENDED: Masks are recommended for participants that are not vaccinated against COVID-19. CHECK-IN: The tour begins promptly at the start time. Please arrive 5 minutes prior to the start of the tour and check in with your guide who will be wearing a blue Detroit Experience Factory t-shirt. PARKING: There is a parking lot at the starting point or street parking nearby. Use of public transportation is also encouraged as an alternative. TICKETING: No need to print your ticket. Arrive a few minutes early to check-in and give the guide your name. That's it! If your plans change and you can't make it, please cancel your booking to open up your spot to another participant.
