ROUND ROCK, TX — A Round Rock police lieutenant has been selected by the International Association of Chiefs of Police to receive its annual 40 Under 40 Award. Lieutenant Tom Sloan, who has been with the department since 2008, was a recipient for the annual award. He was chosen out of many for his willingness to take on others' responsibilities without hesitation. Officials said Sloan enlisted in the U.S. Marine Corps after September 11 and has served a 12-year career at the Round Rock Police Department. Today, Sloan oversees the department's SWAT team and three units within its Criminal Investigations Division. When he was a sergeant in the Traffic Unit, Sloan starred in the award-winning "Tom's Traffic Tips" video series, which informed citizens on a variety of traffic laws and issues over 30 episodes. "I am incredibly honored to be recognized with this prestigious award," said Sloan. "I must reflect the credit on the amazing agency that is the Round Rock Police Department. If not for the exceptional leadership, and their support, I would not have been in the position to launch new ideas to solve old problems. I am moved and very grateful." The award recognizes law enforcement professionals under the age of 40 from around the world who demonstrate leadership and exemplify commitment to their profession. The winners will be recognized on Sept. 14 during the online IACP 2021 Annual Conference and featured in the September issue of Police Chief magazine. The 12-year department veteran is one of two Texans who were selected on the list. Previous Round Rock Police Department recipients include former Public Information Specialist Angelique Myers in 2017 and former Operations Support Manager Becky Rodriguez in 2016. "It is an honor for the Round Rock Police Department to be acknowledged alongside law enforcement agencies from around the world," said Police Chief Allen Banks. "We aspire to be a department others look to as a model of what's right in policing, and Lieutenant Tom Sloan helps us maintain that reputation. We are grateful for his leadership and innovative programs." MORE STORIES:Have You Seen This Man? Round Rock PD Needs Your Help.
