Description
Dozens of men who earned the military’s highest distinction are demanding that heads roll after President Joe Biden chose to pull the U.S. military out of Afghanistan in defeat and left hundreds of Americans stranded in Taliban-controlled territory.
No less than 90 generals and admirals from across the branches of the U.S. military have called on the main leaders and architects of America’s withdrawal to resign.
“A fundamental principle in the military is holding those in charge responsible and accountable for their actions or inaction,” the distinguished military servicemen wrote in an open letter to the administration. “There must be accountability at all levels for this tragic and avoidable debacle.”
“The consequences of this disaster are enormous and will reverberate for decades beginning with the safety of Americans and Afghans who are unable to move safely to evacuation points; therefore, being de facto hostages of the Taliban at this time,” says the letter from Flag Officers 4 Freedom. “The death and torture of Afghans has already begun and will result in a human tragedy of major proportions.”
The generals point out the human cost of Biden’s bungling: He left 40,000 American citizens or Afghan allies “stranded in dangerous areas controlled by a brutal enemy,” the letter says. That includes an estimated 15,000 Americans and 25,000 Afghans who helped U.S. forces during the two-decade-long war.
