Free, Limited Space Available This brand new tour explores the Hammond-Harwood House’s collection of nine elaborate clocks from the 17th, 18th, and early 19th centuries. The tour begins with an in depth history of timekeeping from sundials to Chinese water clocks. The invention of the pendulum in the 17th century modernized horological devices and a rising artisan class created clocks for elite and middle class markets as consumer demand expanded. The tour will examine each item, admiring the individual creation of the piece, its decorative design, and the social history connected to it. You will come away from this experience with a better appreciation for what time meant to our ancestors as well as how we tell time today. In partnership with local horologist Stephen Sieracki, Hammond-Harwood House is engaged in a project to bring all nine clocks in the collection to working order. Tour text was researched and written by Rachel Lovett and Bob Mulcrone. Presented by Bob Mulcrone (Hammond-Harwood House Guide). The mission of the Hammond-Harwood House Association is to preserve, for public education and enjoyment, the architecturally significant Hammond-Harwood House museum and its collection of fine and decorative arts.
