CONCORD, NH — Infrastructure is on a lot of minds right now in both New Hampshire and Washington these days. U.S. Sen. Maggie Hassan stopped by the International Union of Painters and Allied Trades Training Center in Brentwood on Thursday to speak with leaders and apprentices about the recent infrastructure bill approved in the Senate. "I was glad to have the opportunity to tour IUPAT's training center in Brentwood, which is helping to strengthen our workforce by providing opportunities for apprentices to master their skills and learn new ones," she said. "As we discussed during my visit, the bipartisan infrastructure bill that I worked to negotiate would both provide new opportunities for workers and repair New Hampshire's aging roads and bridges. I will continue working with members of both parties to get this once-in-a-generation bill signed into law so that we can quickly move forward to repair our infrastructure and create good-paying jobs for Granite Staters." Roger Brunelle, the political director for IUPAT District Council 35, said it was great she stopped by to tour the facility. "The apprentices at our center are working hard to gain the skills that they need to enter the workforce, and the investments in this infrastructure bill will make those skills even more valuable," he said. "I'm grateful to have Senator Hassan fighting for our best interest in Congress, and I know that she is focused on getting this bill over the finish line." U.S. Sen. Dartmouth-Hitchcock Health Issues Vaccine Mandate One of the state's largest hospital systems is requiring all employees to be vaccinated for COVID-19 while also increasing wages and taking other measures to retain employees. Officials said infections increasing in the state had led to the decision to follow up on its more restrictive visitor policies. "We are, in many ways, returning to operational controls that served us well early in the pandemic," D-HH Chief Clinical Officer Edward J. Merrens, MD said. "We realize the impact that this is having on our patients, their families, and our staff, but we ask for everyone's patience and understanding as we continue our work to be able to provide safe, high-quality care for all of our patients, as well as those who support and care for those patients as well." The system noted a new report showing a survey of nurses that found more than 40 percent were considering leaving their careers. The system, to secure retention, raised wages to $30 an hour to start for new nurses. Other staffers will also receive a 2 percent raise beginning in October. Marathon Runners, Too Even though they will be outside, 2021 Boston Marathon runners, slated to race on Oct. 11, will need a vaccine passport or a negative test to participate, according to WMUR-TV. Masks, however, will not be required. Here is everything published on Patch during the past 24 hours.
