CALVERTON, NY — A dilapidated house in Calverton has been razed, with the property to be preserved as open space, county officials said.
On Tuesday, Brookhaven Town Supervisor Ed Romaine, along with Suffolk County Legislators Al Krupski and Jim Mazzarella, watched the demolition of the vacant house, located at 20 Mill Road.
The property, which had not been maintained for many years, is located within the Central Pine Barrens preservation area. It was seized by Suffolk County as a property tax forfeiture, transferred to the town for demolition. and will be preserved as open space, officials said.
"This house has been a blight on the neighborhood for many years and has numerous town code violations that make it a safety hazard," Romaine said. "Finally, the neighbors will not have to deal with this eyesore any longer."
He thanked Krupski and Mazzarella for working with the town to clean up the community and preserve open space.
