Sad to say that you are correct. However, what took you so long to figure this out? Establishment owners are there to make money. Yes, this is a way for free entertainment. We (musicians) all know that. Some just don't realize that the fault actually falls with them. Owners know that bands will perform for little or nothing. When bands say "yes", all they are doing is paving the way for the next scumbag, cheap-scape owner to do the same. Try seeking out the establishments that are worthy of bands. The ones that are worthy enough to have there own "following", or at least a stage. If you are willing to play for free, treat it as an audition, then make it in a place that has a reputation for having bands. The owner will undoubtedly hire you, and you can get at least. some publicity, or maybe, even a return engagement. Something you won't get from some "hole in the wall" pizza joint. Bands with a following don't need to attend open mic nights. They make the wage they deserved because we have paid our dues. Too many bands think they can make a song list today, and be out touring tomorrow. Wake up!! If your band is just like any other band out there, that accepts these so called " businessmens" terms, then expect to be treated that way.
