“'Such Ruins Were Never Seen in America:' The Looting of Thomas Hutchinson's House during the Stamp Act Riots" presented by John Tyler “'Such Ruins Were Never Seen in America:' The Looting of Thomas Hutchinson's House during the Stamp Act Riots" presented by John Tyler, Editor of Publications for the Colonial Society of Massachusetts, is the first of our 2021 Lowell Lecture Series: Neighborhood Biographies: Three Centuries of North End History. On the night of August 26, 1765, a mob attacked Thomas Hutchinson’s house on Garden Court Street, just off North Square. By the next morning all of his possessions (and those of his servants) had either been carried off by rioters or were left shattered in the street. The detailed inventory of the contents that he submitted, hoping to be reimbursed by the crown, provides a unique insight into what life was like inside a great North End townhouse on the eve of the Revolution. The 2021 Lowell Lecture Series presented by the Paul Revere Memorial Association is a biographical series based on influential individuals with North End connections. By highlighting moments in the lives of Thomas Hutchinson, Prince Hall, and Pauline Agassiz Shaw, this lecture series examines their impact on the North End and beyond. This series covers distinct centuries of change in the North End to provide a more inclusive and comprehensive historical narrative. All lectures will be available to stream for free and recorded for later viewing via WGBH’s Forum Network. Streaming will be provided at https://www.facebook.com/gbhforumnetwork and https://www.youtube.com/gbhforumnetwork Limited in-person reservations will also be available via free Eventbrite registration. Please note, the Paul Revere House and the City of Boston require mask wearing for all indoor public places. Please visit paulreverehouse.org/events/ for information on how to access each lecture.
