(Handouts will be given) About the workshop instructor: Professor Petra Reeves has been a professor of photography for more than 10 years. Petra attended Florida Atlantic University where she earned her undergraduate degree. She then attended Rochester Institute of Technology in 2011, where she earned her Master of Fine Arts. Her first job was a product photographer at an auction house in Florida, but her calling came in being a professor of photography. Petra started instructing at The Art Institute of Austin where she realized that she loved nothing more than to help someone realize how brilliant they can be, especially when they have never known encouragement. Teaching photography to a wildly diverse group of people in her teaching career has made instructing pleasurable. Instructing provides, “a balance between responsibility and joy,” as she defines happiness. Petra has taken all she has learned from a select few wonderful professors/mentors and her students, which have inspired her far more than any famous photographers and applied this to her work. The seminars that she will be conducting will allow for the attendee’s to gather technical understanding and to have hands-on experience with guidance and a structured critique. These classes will emulate the blocks of instruction that she provides at Precision Camera in Austin, TX. She will be able to provide that expertise that is sought out by many photographers but don’t know where to turn to get it. She was asked when she knew when she was a Chief Photographer/Professor and her reply, “Once I felt I could take on any photographic project b/c I am confident I can shoot almost anything.” Being this humble is why Petra will be remembered as someone who tries to always put the needs of others before her own. Petra is married and together they have one little photographer. In her spare time she gardens, loves to play video games, and to be outside with her daughter.
