Description
NEWTON, MA — Newton has updated its leaf blower ordinance to require commercial landscapers to register with the Inspectional Services Department (ISD) before working on city properties.
The new ordinance, which goes into effect on Monday, September 6, will also require landscapers to provide contact and vehicle registration information and attest that they understand Newton's bylaw that prohibits the use of all leaf blowers above 65 decibels.
Violations of the ordinance will be enforced by a seasonal ISD inspector who will oversee the program in cooperation with Newton police. Companies can be fined for violations and homeowners can be held responsible and fined if an unregistered landscaper violates the ordinance at their property.
The changes to Newton's leaf blower ordinance are part of the city's FY2022 budget that added funding to the ISD to pay for a seasonal inspector and take enforcement responsibilities away from the police department.
Starting on Labor Day, gas or electric leaf blowers that meet the decibel requirement are allowed Monday through Friday from 7:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. and Saturdays from 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.
