NEWTON, MA — Mayoral candidate Amy Mah Sangiolo has applauded the Newton City Council's request to Mayor Ruthanne Fuller to make COVID-19 vaccines mandatory for city and school employees.
In addition to requiring vaccines, Sangiolo said she believes that those who cannot wear a face covering due to medical conditions or religious beliefs should be tested weekly.
"With more infectious COVID-19 variants spreading in our community, it only makes sense tomandate vaccines so we can keep our kids healthy and keep them in school." said Sangiolo in a statement. "No one wants a repeat of last year's experience. "
Sangiolo's statement comes after all 24 members of the City Council called for the mayor to institute a citywide indoor mask mandate and require vaccines for city and school employees in a memorandum sent on August 23.
Fuller has since instituted an indoor mask mandate, which will go into effect on Thursday, September 2. The city has not yet released information on a potential vaccination mandate.
