After-School Activities Cancelled In Prince William Due To Storms

PRINCE WILLIAM COUNTY, VA — After-school activities for Prince William County Schools on Wednesday, Sept. 1 have been cancelled, the school district announced. Severe storms caused by Tropical Depression Ida are expected to impact the area throughout the evening. "Due to impending weather, all activities scheduled in PWCS or on school grounds for this afternoon and evening are canceled," the school district wrote on Twitter. The evening's school board meeting will be held in a hybrid format, officials said. SACC, the school district's after-school childcare program, will remain open until 5 p.m. on Wednesday. All other events at schools in the evening, including club meetings, team practices, interscholastic contests, and athletic activities, are cancelled. On Wednesday morning, the National Weather Service issued a flood warning for Prince William County. Tropical Depression Ida, which was formerly Hurricane Ida, brought heavy rain and winds to the area overnight. The severe weather is expected to continue through Wednesday evening. Following strong overnight storms, more thunderstorms are predicted for Wednesday afternoon and evening, bringing rainfall amounts of 2 to 4 inches and as much as 6 inches in some areas across Northern Virginia and D.C. With heavy rains falling in such a short period of time, the likelihood flooded streets, small streams and creeks increases. In addition, high winds accompanying thunderstorms could lead to downed trees and power lines in some areas, creating power outages and blocked roads.Although parts of Northern Virginia and D.C. are not currently reporting any rain, the National Weather Service encouraged residents to monitor weather conditions throughout the day.
