Description

FAIRFAX COUNTY, VA — On Wednesday, Fairfax County Public Schools canceled after-school activities on school grounds. There was no change to classes during the school day. The after-school cancellations at FCPS apply to: extracurricular activities, interscholastic contests, team practices, field trips, middle school after-school programs, professional learning and training courses, Adult Community Education classes, adult high school and GED, recreation programs and community use by outside groups, and virtual and in-person Back-to-School Nights. School Age Child Care centers will be open until 6:15 p.m., but families are asked to pick up children early if possible. The school district did not cite a reason for the cancellations, but the National Weather Service expects the remnants of Ida to bring heavy rainfall and a chance of flooding Wednesday. The region already encountered thunderstorms overnight, which caused flooding and outages in parts of Fairfax County. Parts of Fairfax County are under a flood warning through midday, and the entire region is under a flash flood watch through Thursday morning. A tornado watch is in effect through 7 p.m. Wednesday.
