ARLINGTON, VA — Arlington County Police charged a D.C. man on Tuesday afternoon with sexual battery and abduction for grabbing a woman in an elevator, according to the daily crime report.
Officers responded around 12:24 p.m. to the 3800 block of Fairfax Drive for the report of a suspicious person. Based on information they had received from the dispatch, the officers spotted the male suspect in the area and tried to stop him. When the man ran away, the officers began to chase him on foot.
Eventually, the man stopped in the vicinity of Washington Boulevard and North Monroe Street, turned and faced the officers. They were able to take him into custody without incident.
During the arrest, the suspect received minor injuries. Police took him to a nearby hospital for treatment.
A preliminary investigation revealed that the man in custody had approached the victim when she entered a business. He tried to engage her in a conversation, but then left the building and sat down outside.
When the victim left the business, the man followed her onto an elevator and tried talking to her again. Advancing toward the victim, the man grabbed her waist and touched her buttocks, according to police. When the victim tried to step away, the man kept her from leaving the elevator.
Police charged Anthony Jeffers, 36, of Washington, D.C., with abduction and sexual battery.
