New Brunswick Police Officer Delivers Baby In Surprise Delivery

NEW BRUNSWICK, NJ — A New Brunswick patrol officer successfully delivered a newborn baby girl this past Monday. The baby was delivered in a private home and the mother had not been planning to go into labor so suddenly, according to details of the event released by the city of New Brunswick. At 1:23 p.m. Monday, Officer Eddie Rodriguez was dispatched to a 911 call of a woman in active labor at the home where she lived on Welton Street. When he got there, the mother, Angelica Mencias, 28, told him her water suddenly broke and she was in labor. Rodriguez was the first to arrive at the scene; no other EMTs or first responders were there. Rodriguez, a six-year veteran of the police force, quickly assessed the situation and determined that delivery would need to occur at the home. There were other family members present and they gave him towels for the delivery. He began to guide the baby out and soon discovered that the umbilical cord had wrapped around the baby's neck. Officer Rodriguez was able to remove the cord from around the baby's neck and delivered the baby girl. "The sound of the baby girl crying brought relief to the parents," and the police officer, according to the press release. Moments later EMS arrived and after an evaluation, both the newborn girl and her mother were transported to Saint Peter's University Hospital.
