Here are the top stories today in Houston: Let's get it kicked off with something lighthearted and delicious. The weather may not match yet, but pumpkin spice has already landed in 2021. (Houstonia Magazine) Houston Food Not Bombs is locked in a battle with Houston City Hall after officials notified the organization it couldn't resume feeding homeless people at the Houston Public Library Central Branch once it reopens. The city is attempting to move the organization to the Houston Municipal Court on Lubbock Street. (KPRC Click2Houston) A Houston mechanic was killed during a work accident while performing preventative maintenance on an airboat in the lube shop at Houston Public Works Pahet Service Center, according to a city spokesperson. Manuel Castillo had been working the city's Fleet Management Department since 2006. (Texas Monthly) The Texas Transportation Commission voted to allow the Interstate 45 project to continue but will revisit it in November. The project, which would expand and reroute the interstate in the downtown area, would displace thousands of residents from their homes through eminent domain. The Federal Highway Administration is conducting a civil rights investigation into the project, which has garnered scrutiny over its environmental impact and received pushback from Houston Mayor Sylvester Turner and Harris County Judge Lina Hidalgo.
