TEMECULA, CA — A convicted felon suspected of trying to break into Rancho Elementary School in Temecula last week while students were in session has been charged with multiple crimes. Raymond Dewey Amick, 31, of Temecula pleaded not guilty Tuesday to felony vandalism and burglary charges, as well as loitering and disturbing the peace, both misdemeanors, court records show. Around 2 p.m. Friday, Amick used a large pipe to smash school windows and damage a car in the campus parking lot at 31530 La Serena Way, according to the Riverside County Sheriff's Department. The alleged mayhem prompted a lockdown at the public school. When deputies arrived at the campus, they arrested Amick without incident. He required medical attention from "self-inflicted injuries" caused by smashing windows, according to the sheriff's department. Students and school staff were not injured. Amick's motive for the alleged attempted break-in was unclear. Tuesday night he remained jailed at Southwest Detention Center in lieu of $100,000 bail. He is due in court on Sept. 9 for a felony settlement conference. Rancho Elementary is part of the Temecula Valley Unified School District.
