HAYWARD, CA —The Hayward Police Department reported a peaceful resolution to a Tuesday incident in which a man, armed with a shotgun, threatened to commit suicide near a local park.
According to the HPD, officers were dispatched to the area near Weekes Community Center Park, 27182 Patrick Ave., after reports of gunshots. Officers searched the area and eventually found the man, who was armed. He fired a round of shots into the air and said he wanted to take his own life, police said.
Officers blocked off the area and began negotiations with the man. After about 30 minutes, the man put down the gun and surrendered into police custody, according to officials.
The HPD said there were no injuries and the man is receiving mental health help.
"We are grateful for the peaceful outcome and want to thank the community for their support as we continue our efforts to help those in crisis," the HPD said in a statement on social media.
