WINSTON-SALEM, NC —A student shot at a Winston-Salem high school Wednesday afternoon has died from his injuries, as the hours-long search for the suspect who open fired at Mount Tabor High School ended without incident, authorities said Wednesday evening. "The suspect from the shooting at Mt Tabor High School was taken into custody without incident," Forsyth County Sheriff's Office said. "The investigation is ongoing and we will release more information as appropriate. " The shooting is the second school shooting reported in the state this week. Several Winston-Salem schools were placed on lockdown midday Wednesday following the shooting. According to an early local report by WXII, the shooting was initially reported by a school resource officer assigned to Mount Tabor High School. "There has been a shooting on school property," Winston-Salem Police Department confirmed. "We and the WSPD have secured the campus and are doing everything possible to keep students safe. We are actively investigating what happened and will share confirmed information when available." The county sheriff's office confirmed a student was injured in the shooting, but did not initially list their condition. The victim was transported to Wake Forest Baptist Medical Center, where he was later pronounced dead, Winston-Salem Police Chief Catrina Thompson said Wednesday evening at a news conference. Forsyth County Sheriff Bobby F. Kimbrough, Jr. said the victim was identified as William Chavis Raynard Miller, Jr. The suspect from the shooting at Mt Tabor High School was taken into custody without incident. No other injuries were reported during the shooting, however one student in the school had a seizure during the lockdown, Thompson said. Wednesday afternoon, Gov. Roy Cooper said he had authorized state-level resources in support of the hunt for the suspected shooter. "For the second time this week, we have seen a shooting in a North Carolina school," Cooper said. "Our prayers are with the victims, their families and all the students of Mt. Tabor High School in Winston-Salem. I have been briefed by law enforcement and the Department of Public Safety is ready to provide any support necessary. We must work to ensure the safety of students and educators, quickly apprehend the shooter and keep guns off school grounds. Mount Tabor High School is on lockdown.
