18-Foot-Tall Sculpture Installed On White Plains' Main Street

WHITE PLAINS, NY — A huge sculpture is now on display in front of 50 Main St. in White Plains. The nearly 18-foot-tall sculpture, which is made of highly polished stainless steel, is displayed on a pedestal at the entrance to the office tower owned and managed by Ginsburg Development Companies, according to a news release. Titled "Fragments of Something Bigger," the sculpture is the work of Bulgarian sculptor Georgi Minchev, who was selected through a competitive open call process managed by ArtsWestchester. Artists were invited to submit proposals for the site, and Ginsburg and ArtsWestchester received submissions from 36 highly qualified sculptors. In addition to Minchev, the other two finalists were David Provan and Piero Manrique, both of Rockland County. Minchev said he was looking for new means of expression in his work and decided to use combinations of the basic geometric figure cube. "This form, together with the sphere, are one of the most communicative and understanding geometric forms for man," he said. Minchev said polished stainless steel was selected for its ability to reflect light. "This exciting new sculpture is yet another example of how working in partnership with ArtsWestchester we are bringing outstanding public art to Downtown White Plains and Westchester County," said GDC Principal Martin Ginsburg. "Minchev's signature steel sculpture will welcome visitors to White Plains and feel fresh and new every time people pass by it due to the varied reflection of light off the sculpture's material," explained Janet T. Langsam, CEO of ArtsWestchester. The new sculpture is the latest collaboration between Ginsburg Development and ArtsWestchester.
