MOUNTAIN BROOK, AL — Mountain Brook High School senior Bickley Bowron was recently elected President Pro-Tem at Girls Nation, an annual civic training program run by the American Legion Auxiliary. Bowron and fellow senior Jane Gray Battle were selected by Mountain Brook High School to attend Girls State in Tuscaloosa in June. Each summer, around 20,000 young women participate in week-long Girls State programs across the nation. Every American Legion Auxiliary Girls State program operates with the same patriotic values through a program where students assume the roles of government leaders, campaigning as "Federalists" and "Nationalists" to become city, county and state officials of their Girls State. Toward the end of the week-long Girls State program, Bowron's peers selected her to be interviewed by staff for ALA Girls Nation Senator. She and Graci Doster of Enterprise were selected as one of two senators to represent Alabama at this prestigious program held in Washington, DC a few weeks ago. At Girls Nation, Bickley was elected by her peers to serve at President Pro-Tem of the Senate. In this role, she helped facilitate legislation to the Senate floor for debate and provided a smooth order of business. Bowron is also a New Gen Peacebuilders member, a member of YouthServe's Youth Action Council, participates in YMCA's Youth in Government and is a member of the National Honor Society.
