Join us for a yearlong survey of what’s growing at the Bartlett Arboretum & Gardens. Classes are ongoing & meet the first Sat. of each month Join artist Kathie Miranda for a yearlong survey of what’s growing at the Bartlett Arboretum & Gardens. Classes are ongoing and meet the first Saturday of each month, purchased in 6-month blocks. You’ll work with graphite or colored pencil to create a series of work documenting subjects of interest to you from the Bartlett’s special collections and gardens. Potential series are many and choices include: Follow a plant’s life cycle - from shoot to fruit Plant as host for pollinators - butterflies, moths, bees Story of a plant - economic or ornamental significance Study a particular plant family - e.g., Lily, Aster, Holly Focus on one collection or garden - e.g., Conifers, Azaleas, Native Plants Each session begins with a demonstration to address drawing challenges as well as practical tips on best practices for working in a series. Learn advanced graphite and colored pencil techniques to accurately portray the three-dimensional quality of your plant’s existence “in the round”. Alternate sessions will introduce natural science drawing conventions, with an emphasis on pollinators and specimens associated with the plant’s habitat. We will work from our own photographs supplemented with live materials as available. The instructor will recommend books for reference and additional study tailored to your project. Completion of Introduction to Botanical Illustration or similar drawing experience is recommended but not required. Registration is $270 for Bartlett members and $300 for non-members. The Bartlett Arboretum & Gardens is one of Fairfield County’s leading botanical and horticultural education resources featuring 93 acres of open, green space located on the historical property of well-known arborist Dr. Francis A. Bartlett. This irreplaceable resource features the best of what Connecticut's native landscape has to offer: magnificent Champion trees, charming gardens, wildflower meadows, red maple wetlands and boardwalks, woodland walking trails, varied wildlife and native habitats. The Bartlett Arboretum & Gardens offers a wide variety of educational opportunities for people of all ages. Our adult lectures are provided by highly regarded professionals in various botany and horticulture fields. As a regional resource for science education and a nationally recognized Arboretum, the Bartlett is perfectly positioned to provide students with a unique experience of complete immersion into nature science. We currently offer several core programs to the youth of the community including school programs, after school programs, outreach programs and a summer camp. The Nature Explore Classroom, an outdoor classroom, answers the profound need for connecting young children with nature. Another great educational tool, the Bartlett Arboretum’s Herbarium and Research Library is a collection of more than 6,000 sheets of preserved plants from around the world dating back to 1887. Open during the summer months, University of Connecticut Master Gardeners, answer questions and assist the community in garden-related topics through their Plant Clinic (free).
