ATTICA—From September 9 to 13, 1971, prisoners took control of the Attica Correctional Facility and made a series of demands to prison administrators to change their living conditions. The uprising was sparked by incidents the day before where prisoners witnessed guards abusing and torturing inmates, one whom the prisoners knew was innocent, as they took to the infamous box—Attica’s segregation unit. The prisoners held about 40 hostages for negotiations. After four days of fruitless negotiations with prison intermediaries and public citizens acting of behalf of the inmates, Gov. Nelson Rockefeller ordered that the prison be retaken—39 people were killed in a 15-minute state police assault. 9/11—On Septembr 11, 2001, 19 members of al Qaeda, described as an extremist Islamic miltant organization, hijacked four airplanes and carried out suicide attacks against targets in the United States. Two of he planes were flown into the twin towers of the World Trade Center in New York City, a third plane hit the Pentagonjust outside Washington, DC, and the fourth plane crashed in a field in Shanksville, Pennysylvania. Almost 3,000 people were killed during the 9/11 terorist attacks, which triggered major US initiatives to combat terrorism abroad and defined the presidency of George W Bush.
