NANUET, NY — The New York Foundling launched its new Day Habilitation and Employment Services site for people with developmental disabilities with a ribbon-cutting ceremony Aug. 26. The new Day Habilitation 'Without Walls' program will work to create local employment, volunteer, and recreational experiences for people with developmental disabilities. "We are thrilled to bring our Day Habilitation Without Walls and Employment Services to the community in Nanuet," said Bill Baccaglini, President of The New York Foundling. "We know that only around 1 in 3 working-age individuals with developmental disabilities are actively employed, and roughly 25 percent of adults with developmental disabilities report that they don't have anyone in their life to talk to about their goals and purpose. Our programs aim to change these numbers in every community, including Nanuet." The Day Habilitation program gives provides participants the opportunity to connect with one another, gain skills, follow their passions, and achieve their goals with others in their own community each day. The staff creates opportunities and experiences for participants based on their likes and dislikes, and their goals — both personal and professional. The Workforce and Employment Services program in Nanuet will allow each participant to work closely with a job coach on their path toward employment through goal-setting, skills training, and personalized support once employment begins. The organization's employment services have helped place many adults with developmental disabilities who are eager to work in stable and fulfilling jobs across New York City and Westchester. The New York Foundling, begun in 1869, supports a quarter-million people — children, families, adults — on their own paths to stability, strength, and independence with social services that are both proven and practical. "For 150 years, The Foundling has been dedicated to making sure that every individual has the opportunities and access they need to reach their full potential," Baccaglini said.
