Most Eligible Falmouth Students Are Fully Vaccinated

FALMOUTH, MA — With the first day of school about a week away, more than half of eligible students in Falmouth Public Schools will head back to class on Sept. 1 fully vaccinated against coronavirus. Superintendent Lori Duerr said as of last week, 54 percent of students ages 12-15 were fully vaccinated, and 69 percent of students ages 16-19 were also fully vaccinated. As of August, only the Pfizer version of the vaccine was approved for use in children under age 18. Falmouth, like every other school district in Massachusetts, will have to start the school year with an indoor mask mandate. The mandate will last until at least Oct. 1, and will require the help of vaccinations to be lifted. Officials with the Massachusetts Department of Elementary and Secondary Education said schools will need a vaccination rate of at least 80 percent before any mask mandates can be lifted. To help the district reach that number, Falmouth Public Schools will team up with the Barnstable County Health Department to offer vaccine clinics for students. Students who are 12 and older will have the opportunity to receive the Pfizer vaccine (two doses) during school with parent/guardian consent.
