SHOREWOOD, WI — The Shorewood Police Commission promoted Thomas Liebenthal from lieutenant to captain then finally to interim Shorewood Police Chief at its meeting Friday. After a closed-door session to discuss staff matters, the Commission voted to promote Liebenthal from lieutenant to captain. Commission President Richard Cole said Liebenthal was the only lieutenant at the time. Immediately after his promotion, the Commission voted to make Liebenthal the interim police chief. "Now Captain Liebenthal is the highest-ranking officer in the department," Cole said. "Given the circumstances... it makes sense to appoint Captain Liebenthal to the interim police chief position during our transition and search." The Shorewood Police Commission meets on Aug. 27 to discuss the chief of police. Police Chief Peter Nimmer was selected for a chief of police position at the Brown Deer Police Department at the beginning of August. Nimmer starts his new role Wednesday. Nimmer started his role at the Shorewood Police Department in 2015. The search for a new chief of police in Shorewood will be ongoing. "As the search takes shape it will be more transparent," Cole said in the meeting. "Before we have a new police chief, we need someone to run the department."
