ELMHURST, IL — A Harvey man accused of stealing an urn containing an infant's ashes from an Elmhurst house in 2019 has been sentenced to 15 years in prison, prosecutors said Tuesday. Earlier this month, Glenn Addison, 68, pleaded guilty to one count of residential burglary. He received a longer sentence because of his criminal history, according to a news release from the DuPage County State's Attorney's Office. In December 2019, a family in the 200 block of Melrose Avenue reported that a coin collection and an urn containing ashes of their infant son were missing after a burglary of their house, police said. The break-in was in the middle of the day. Eight days later, Addison was arrested. His bond was set at $750,000, and he has remained in the DuPage County Jail ever since. He was on parole for a 2014 burglary when he was arrested in the Elmhurst incident. According to the news release, the Elmhurst family is again in possession of their infant son's ashes. Cremated Remains Case Solved, Baby's Ashes Returned "Mr. Addison's criminal behavior has once again landed him behind bars, as he now finds himself looking at a 15-year sentence," State's Attorney Robert Berlin said in a statement. "The fact that Mr. Addison stole an urn containing the ashes of a deceased infant, which offered absolutely no monetary value to him, demonstrates the utter callousness of his actions and his complete disregard for the sanctity of human life." Addison will be required to serve half of his sentence before being eligible for parole, prosecutors said. He is set to receive credit for time served so far.
