Job Title: Lead Farm Hand
Summary:
Position is based at Avila Valley Barn, a 46 acre (20 acres in production), family owned and operated, mixed fruit and vegetable farm which is open to the public year-round. Through our scheduled fieldtrips and our open gates our farm offers a rare opportunity for the community to “get back on the farm”.
This is a full-time position Tuesday - Saturday 7am-3:30pm working on average 40 hours/week and up to 50 hours/week during high seasonal “pushes”.
Key Job Responsibilities –
• Establish priorities and work plans helping maintain daily flow.
• Record keeping of crop harvest and inputs.
• Perform tractor work in fields and orchards; maintain equipment.
• Manage irrigation schedule, maintenance, and monitoring effectiveness.
• Pressing apple cider onsite.
• Hauling product, equipment and materials between farms.
• In October: stocking the pumpkin displays, as well as harvesting apples.
• Occasionally filling in on tractor rides, produce stocking or roasting corn when in a pinch.
Qualifications
• Experience operating heavy machinery such as tractors and hauling equipment.
• Experience with irrigation systems.
• Self-motivated. Will have times working alone and must be able to perform well while no one is watching.
• Ability to lift 40 pounds repeatedly, wake up on time, and do physical labor for 40+ hours per week.
• Desire for long-term commitment, growth, and the farming lifestyle.
• Preferred: Bilingual in Spanish.
• Possession of a current valid driver’s license and clean driving record.
Salary
This is a full-time position located in San Luis Obispo county. Compensation commensurate with experience ranging from $16-18/hr.
